Stretching and Moving in the Summer Heat

Warmer weather and higher temperatures mean our muscles can more easily warm up (literally!)

Some ideas to consider for healthy activity in the heat:

  • Slow and steady warm ups: The temperature can make it easier to warm up before exercise, which can make it tempting to jump right into our workout. However, even a short session of slow and steady stretching or dynamic warm up movement before exercise can still keep us safe while avoiding accidentally overdoing it.
  • Sweating is normal: hydration and the right nutrition can help support us through the heat. Depending on your health history, your medical professional or care team may have the best personalized advice for you about eating, nutrients, ideal hydration amounts, and electrolytes.
  • Sun protection: if you are exercising outside, you can think about shade and time of day, light layers, sunscreen or products with SPF, hat, sunglasses, and being aware of any weather updates or excessive heat warnings to protect yourself.
  • Slow and steady cool downs: After exercise, coming into any stretches or active recovery slowly and steadily can help protect us from accidentally overdoing it when our muscles are really warmed up in the summer heat.

Whether through Stretch Therapy or Chiropractic Care, we are happy to support you in moving your best and optimizing your health this summer!
